Hi everyone,
Just wondering whether anybody knows anything about importing minis from new zealand? Whether it is possible etc... I wouldn't have a idea where to start looking (i did a search on the net but it is all mumbo jumbo to me)
Any help would be great :o)

It's possible as long as the car is 1988 or earlier. You get the details and apply to DOTARS in Canberra for approval then import the vehicle.

Look out though, roll-on roll-off shipping of cars from NZ to Aus is way more expensive than it should be. It's actually more expensive than from Japan.

If you add up all of the associated costs you can quickly make it not worth while.

Example: a $1500 car imported from Japan would cost at least $5000 to get into your garage, uncomplied and unregistered. NZ may be even more.

Some of the costs are fixed and some are a % of the purchase price. The government triple dips so you pay tax upon tax.

Things you'll pay for:
initial purchase, NZ shipping to port, port charges, packing into container or RORO packing charge. Shipping, unloading at Aus port. Cleaning fee, customs inspection, duty, GST, import application, quarantine inspection, local shipping, compliance, roadworthy, registration. In my experience some of these fees are outrageous but you are stuck with them. I paid $300 cleaning fees prior to quarantine inspection supposedly for a steam clean of engine bay & mechnicals. It wasn't done but I had to pay.

Places like Brickworx are NOT ripping us off with their prices.

I've heard similar stories about Sydney - charging you $200 a day while your car sits on the open dock. :(

I priced shipping a car from NZ south island to Melboure in a container. Cheapest quote was $3K!!!

EDIT: ...$3K not including GST and Import Duty!

here is an idea, a mate of mine is shipping his charger over to NZ for their equivalent of a variety club bash, and the shipping guys are throwing in the shipping to and for NZ for $300. Hell the ferry from Wellington to Picton is costing him more.

you could always buy a NZ car, use it in the bash and then get sponsored shipping back to oz.....lots of money to raise to get into it though

A lot less charges if mini is over 30 years imported Elf was very easy and not expensive just a steep learning curve. Only worth doing if car is 30+

Steve, I'd be very interested to know who imported the Elf for from NZ and what the cost breakdown looks like. Please PM me if you can with details if you can. I went to a lot of trouble trying to organise shipping for a car once, meanwhile someone else bought the car! :(

The last container load of minis i heard of leaving New Zealand didn't arrive in the US safely...
a mini ute fell down on top of a Cooper S and an Elf...
I don't need to tell the ending.
End of importing minis for one guy.

I had a car arrive safely from Hong Kong only to be hit twice by a forklift in the Brisbane customs clearance zone. I had paid $$$ for insurance but nobody would accept responsibility. The big blue mistake cost me $5,000 to buy but was $13,000 registered. Plus another 2k to fix all the intermittant faults and perished rubber items. Then I found all the rust... Sold the heap of junk for $8,000. Last time I'll do that.
