you dont want anything fancy and bulky, unless its made of carbon fibre of something.. i didnt make mine but its what i would have done anyway.. really thin sheet of aluminium.. screw it to the normal dash rails, or if your car has a different one like mine, screw it to that.. but here are some pics with my personal ideas on layout.

basically you need your vitals infront of you and everything else is just for looks, i can see my oil pressure light, tachometer and my water temp, i have amps and oil temp too but they arent a "glance" gauge in hillclimbing and sprints so they dont have to be in my imediate view there are no switches on the dash, when im belted into the car i can just about get first gear with the shifter in the standard position so put anything you need to touch, close to you.
