Only reason I would need a lighter socket in the car would be to charge the mobile phone - under the dash rail is the obvious spot but has anyone put one under the back seat? - would like to not see it

I've got one in the 850, and I just put it under the dash rail, but pushed it right back toward the firewall

Means I have to plug my charger in by touch, instead of seeing where it's going, but it's invisible and easy enough to use.

Thanks guys - I'll look at putting it under the dash rail toward the firewall - might even look at putting one in the rear side pocket.

In the 60's I had one of these;



It fitted in the rear pocket and with the handle horizontal it wedged it in with a gap in front of the speaker. One tape held a whole LP each way so with auto reverse you got to play two LPs - Beatles all the way

I got one of these 12v acc sockets from ARB.

As Adam mentioned mounted it on the passenger side up under the shelf far enough toward the firewall that it is out of site. Because it's all black and with the cap in it really hides in the shadows.

I tried one under the back seat but found it a pain because then your phone ends up on the floor/passenger seat.

Also a Navman is the other handy use for a socket and again the cord won't often reach.

Acc plugs tend to fit them in these better than a "cigarette lighter" socket too.

I have ones in bluey in both door pockets and rear seat pockets out of view for personal items, whether it be ipod, iphone, phone or what have you, then have another 4 plug connector under the dash out of view for anything that pop's up like a GPS, video camera, CB, fridge or whatever it may be..

I am needing to do the same , where would be the best place to wire it in ?, the fuse box or into the ignition switch with an inline fuse.

This thread has helped my thinking and I will put a switched one off the ignition under the dash and another one in the rear passenger side pocket straight from the fuse box for running car fridge or lights I want on when the ignition is off. I already have a heavy red/black wire I included in the wire loom in case I needed it.

I've got one mounted up near the roof of my enclosed trailer too, so I can run a car fridge in there. I set up all my cars to have a fused 12v supply through the spare (AUX) pin on the trailer plug.

ok I'm gonna have a go installing a lighter for phone charger / ipod etc

I read somewhere on here that it is wise to put in a fuse between the lighter and power

what size fuse is recommended?

also, it is a positive earth so excuse me for being dumb on this, I would be taking it I use the red wire as the earth and hook the black one up on the back of the ignition?

another idea would be to install a USB port somewhere, its 12v and far more discrete, and versatile.
