Guys,

I have a 1275 engine and when idling(in neutral) the gearbox makes a 'click click click..' noise.
But once you press the clutch in the noise goes away.
Is this ment to happen? Could this cause any permanent damage to the gearbox?

Cheers
Matt

When a car is idling the following are still moving inside...
Drop gears
first motion shaft and outrigger
Layshaft(counter shaft)
corresponding gears 1,2 and 3
With your foot on the clutch all these stop spinning.
my guess without hearing it would be first motion shaft bearing...
what sort of noise exactly

it is a clicking noise which happens at regularintervals... ie one circular motion as it occurs at regular intervals.

Still thinking first motion shaft bearing.
Maybe the cage has broken and the balls are floating in the remainder of the cage.
They bunch up and "drop" one at a time as the bearing moves.
Drain the oil and see if any bearing bits come out, stick a magnet in the plug hole

Primary gear rattle, I bet. Only does it when hot??
Typical `old Mini' problem... no real problem.
