Well magnets stick to it...it's at least ferrous.

Anyway, isn't steel an alloy?

Not really. Iron is the element. Steel is mostly Ferrous (Iron II) but with some extra including (Iron III, the ion of tha tis rust).

So I guess you could say it is an Alloy, but really for the sake of it, it's not, it's really Iron.

um ...yes..derr

I using a pipe wrench. The problem is TPO has used a cold chisel on it. So I have nothing to grip on. The bolt is completely mangled.

Maybe I should be clearer. Any sugesstions on how to remove a magled sump bolt?

We just went through this last night on another thread. But it looks like you may have to resort to the cold chisel as well and replace it.

http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic ... col+chisel

Once the chisel has touched it, it's usually useless for anything else.

If it's not working with a pipe wrench/stilsons which has a longer handle than a pair of vice grips then I doubt vice grips will budge it .

Stephen , if all else fails , try an easy out as BOB1275 suggested or even weld (short bursts so as to not build up too much heat) a nut onto the end of it . Have you put the stilsons on it and put a jack under the end and left it sitting with pressure on it for a while , might help persuade it to come loose ...

Is there enough meat left to file a couple of flats for a large open ender :?:

Drilling it could be harder than what you think....what happens when you get through the soft alloy head and hit the magnet...does it just fall off into the sump :?: You could fish it out I suppose but could be tricky.

OH...have you tried a little local heat :?: It probably has been thread locked.

Don't mess about, plug is steel, just get the MIG and weld a socket to it. It'll be off in seconds. 8)

What's going on? A rash of sump plugs jamming? It's like they've all gone on strike. Anyone remember the movie maximum overdrive? maybe the machines are conspiring against us....

Doc you could also weld a nut on :?: ....maybe people should be putting copper grease on the thread when they do oil changes...and not overtightening the plug.

As doc ssaid... Go down to super cheap get yourself a cheap socket to fit a larg ratchet preferbly a 1/2 drive rachet (big sucker ratchet) or if you dont have a 1/2 drive ratchet get one for a 3/8 drive Then weld what ever size socket you got onto your sump plug. Plug your ratchet in and it will be offf so quick.

By the way I havent tried this and if you do, let us know how it went.

Mike
