At this stage not sure if I want to buy new crank & pistons (possibly rods as well), or buy a rebuilt complete engine for about the same price!
refurbished crank is obviously an option as well, what to people know about nitrided vs. some kind of cold temp. hardening I've heard mentioned?

Ah easy as.

New crank shaft, get it crank & straightness checked first.
Your rods should be fine unless they haven't hit anything.
Check tunnel clearance (probably will need a quick close up and regrind - easy).
Pistons should also be fine too unless they've tapped the head. Even still, you'd be very surprised!

Not a whole lot of work, and definitely not too much money down either.

Did a -quick- look around, all I can see for NEW crankshaft prices are in the range of $2K???, What type of cranks aren't I finding?
Will need new pistons (http://i120.photobucket.com/albums/o170/hoobiedoo/sven/IMG_1431.jpg). conrods have a few scratches but look straight - mechanic checking them and i'll find out tomorrow with the prices for a rebuild.

I had a Mini crank prepared by a shop in Salem, Michigan USA that works on high performance cranks for serious HP drag racers (among other clients), including welding them back up...so locktiting a Mini crank would seem to be a piece of cake.

ring Josh at Miniimports and get an A+ crank - will use the same large journal rods as your broken one there

$329 Canadian before shiping, brokerage and taxes (no duty on Antigue Auto Parts) is a good price for a new A+ crank as drmini notes.

Last new one I got was just $350 US plus shipping, brokerage and taxes, because I asked for an advertised 10/10 crank. Supplier didn't have the 10/10 crank in stock so sent new one for the same price - otherwise $650.

Fully custom new crank was $1,200 from same US supplier.

Shopping is always useful.
