What are the mini automatic gearboxes like?
Have picked up two 1000 engines with auto boxes fitted. No idea what they are like. Should I keep them, sell them, or use them?
cheers
frank

If you don't need/want outright speed the Autos are fine. Just look after them religiously or they will pack up.

I hope you realise the auto motors will not work on a manual box unless you modify the oilways.
See my sticky at top of the mods forum.

BTW the heads on the 1100 automatics are the 12G295 (same as on a 998 Cooper)- are much sought after by Mini owners.

Thanks for that, I had no idea, I've read that other thread now. Wonder if I will remember it when I need to.

Is there any easy/obvious way of determining if they are any good, or stuffed?

Looks like the vote is to keep them, now I have to make some space somewhere. Anyone want a 1968 Toyota Crown MS53 series 1 wagon tailgate.

The weakest part in them is the facings on the top/reverse and forward clutch plates. They are pretty much just paper. Late model ones are kevlar, more durable.

Parking them for long with dirty acidic oil in buggers up the clutch facings, and can also etch the tracks of the needle roller bearings it is full of.
If you are keeping them for future use I would drain all the oil out then refill to the full mark with some fresh cheapo 20W/50.

If the Crown tailgaye is in good nick it should find a home on Toymods. I actually know someone restoring an MS53.

Minimatic would have been a nicer drive if they had put the 1098 in it. Much more torque than the auto 998 has.

I had a very good 1275 autobox sitting here, it was in my way, I had no room and it had to go, I ended up selling it for $50 complete (no motor).

I have convinced the missus that if any cheap auto gearboxes and or engines are up for sale, I should get it as a back up just in case

I'd have to move a few drum kits to store it, but I'd find the room :D

If anyone wants them, we will exchange them for parts we need or $$.
Located in Ferndale, Perth, WA and probably not worth freighting anywhere.

So far this is what I know we don't have:

Front Bumper - have what I guess is a clubman one, doesn't fit, different mountign style.
Tail lights - have a set of van ones instead, will swap for roundie ones
Front and rear carpets -
door cards -
firewall cladding
firewall hole covers - 1 large front, 1 small front.
rear seat back hole cover
interior linings - missing all of these
trim for side boxes
ashtrays for side boxes
seatbelts

probably heaps more, this is just what I have noticed, and we haven't even started putting it back together yet.

cheers
Frank
