Bob,
After telling me how you `did it' today, my guess is a piston. Or just maybe, a bent rod...

Hmmm..just wondering...if the bore was OK and the Crank was OK...

could you...

Wip the head off...split the engine and box....and

pull the offending piston and rod...drop another piston and rod in....maybe new bearings on just the one....

would this work :?:

Depends what the bore and crank are like.
Can't tell until post mortem.
You would want to strip the motor anyhow.

I will regardless I have decided.

I am sick of band-aid solutions, I just want it right. I will strip the bastard and try and rebuild it as strong as possible, without parting with mega $$$$ I hope

Depending on what's wrong with it and How much time/money I can muster up I may do "a little" to it if I can - I'll just have to wait and see.

I don't think I'll start until Sunday or monday now. At least I have some time off work, and my best mate has lent me his motorbike so I'm semi-mobile until I fix it.

Any suggestions of HP or reliability gains for not too much money appreciated!!! I know not much happens with cars cheaply but I'll see how I go.

Was already thinking about that. How about if I need new rods, offset grinding the crank???

If you do that you will need to take ~1.5mm off the piston tops. Depends what ones you have in there...

Fairly big dollars there. If it is a broken crank the fix is fairly painless as regards internal damage. The dollar damage is a bit painful though. Rather the crank than a rod or piston. To stroke it you need a big journal crank and correct rods.
