G'Day,
From what I could see from the picture (my poor eyesight), while the Lucas 23D4 distributor does not need vacuum advance has the carby vacuum advance takeoff been blocked off?

>>what do you mean by "adjusted the dizzy from scratch" ?

We set the car to 10 degrees off of TDC and then we got the screw-driver with the light and attached it to the block and to the dizzy and rotated the dizzy until the light comes on. Then we rotated the dizzy so the light just turns off. (If that all makes sense)

We have not used the timing light as the car doesnt idle nicely so I thougt that perhaps this wasnt a good time to do the timing?? I thought it may have been due to a air leakage or something and went on to fix that.

>>You have the leads connected up the right way firing order 1-3-4-2 ?

Yep.

>>I can't remember which way the dizzy turns anyone? think it's anti clockwise

Im doing them anti-clockwise.

>>will have to look in the book at home for the float level in the fuel bowl

Okay thanks

>>I think the standard setting is 2 1/2 flats.. so you are way out there.

Ohh.. I have been told many different numbers from many people. As I am running the H6 needle I was told the motor needs to run rich so...

I did try and run the car on 0 and 2 and 4 but it wouldnt keep going unless the choke was out.

Yeah... it has a cap over it... its like a plastic bit which goes on the end.
I'll upload a closeup of the carby when I get home.

The other thing I'd like to add is that when I say the engine slows down and then revs up when it revs up it ROARS... then it struggles.. then it ROARS.. then it struggles.

All the single HS4s had a RH bowl like this one.

Electric or mechanical fuel pump? Is there enough petrol getting into the carby? The old Victa (really old) lawn mower could only be turned off at the carby and you had to wait for it to drain the carby fuel bowl. Near the end it always revved right up just before sputtering out. Sounds like its getting real lean, such as fuel bowl emptying. Check lines, filter and fuel pump. May even be crap in the lines from the fuel tank or in the pickup inside the fuel tank. (Is it new fuel?)

Is the exhaust blocked? If it had a vacuum leak I would suspect you may be able to hear it. Pour a bottle of water over the manifold and all vacuum connections and lines when it is going. Any speed change will become apparent if there is a leak. Can't see it being much else. Fuel supply at idle will only do one thing, flood or not run, timing won't do it, wrong firing order ditto. Is it running on all four, I suspect it is.

I havent checked the exhaust pipe itself.. I know that a lot of smoke pours out of it =)

I know that the top of the exhaust pipe that connects to the manifold has a crack in it.

(Planning to replace the manifold and exhaust with extractors when this bit works)

How could I test this ? disconnect the exhaust from the manifold for a minute ?
