i don't seem to be able to slpit the box from the block
anyone have any tricks to split it off?

Make sure ALL bolts are out including the 2 behind the engine front plate. Then stick a big screwdriver between rear main bearing cap and idler web, and lever it up, gently.

Mostly they are bolts that go into the block through the gearbox mounting web at the top of the gearbox.

However, occasionally the factory puts in a threaded stud with a nut on it and when you go separate the box it gets caught.

I have occasionally had to drift out the two locating dowels before the box would come away cleanly. As Doc said - make sure you have removed the two bolts behind the engine plate which is behind the bottom (harmonic) pulley.

Do not do not do not - insert a screw driver between the mating surfaces of of the gearbox and the block - its recipe for oild leaks. Under the rear main bearing is okay

I had a look at my promary gear and its no good either i think

it's a mini, it will break something sooner or later :roll:
I had 2 years of trouble free before this, so on average i'm doing pretty well i think.

The box is off to Matt read to be gazed upon with experienced eyes and new parts fitted if required....... ok new parts will most likey be fitted.
