The fine print for widened rims is : you cant CUT the rim, insert a band, then reweld them. Wide steel rims must be unmodified and uncut, for them to be okay ( which would make them technically "not widened, just wide rims" )

It is said that modifying a rim compromises the strength of the rim, making them unsafe and therefore illegal.

um...huh?

Im guessing you mean... a rim made to your very own specifications?

I'm not sure about custom made rims..... i guess if they are made the required size from 1 piece of steel it would be okay..... but if you made special rims by chopping up a rim and adding metal to it, it would be illegal in South Australia.

Custom made wheels would most likely need to be tested before they are approved too. Any evidence of seam welding around the rim (as in widened stocky rims) will make them illegal.

Somebody got a link?
A hot rod is just a radically chopped/modified car usually- surely a modified Mini would fall within this net. Or is it model or age specific?

Also reading that you can fit Honda or whatever brakes (but better than stock) and no mention of Engineers reports needed... 8)
<edit> as long as car is 77 or earlier.

My reading of their tea leaves is.. it is referring to disc thickness, (min is 10 for Hondas) not to modifying the diameter.
