You have partly stripped it- either 2nd gear, cluster or both. Usual story.... with too much torque.

It is probably only 1 or 2 teeth, gear teeth are pretty heavy, so they are probably still sitting in the middle of the box. Or they didn't totally break off...
Either way I'd be stripping it for a look, before a tooth jams the gears up.

iv been looking at crap on sump plugs for years and usually i can pick it, but this ones got me, i dont think its a valve spring washer or a selector retaining bolt washer, it could be a broken spring washer piece but it looks a bit to big so my guess is its a bit out of a idler or diff bearing. tell me more when you pull it apart. Thanks.

Could it be from the gear selector/bellcrank from the rodchange box? What do the spacers between the bellcrank levers look like? It would be about the right size and it could explain the loss of one gear.

Part 11 in this diagram...

Some aftermarket lockwashers look a bit like that, use two washers facing each other and they "ratchet" together when done up. If it has been apart in the past they might have used some? Any guess as to exactly where from would be just that but if you are missing a gear best to look for it sooner rather than later.

I wonder if the other half of the washer is stuck in second gear?

My thoughts exactly. If a bit of metal fell between the gears they could munch it down between the teeth. That sure would make it shake while retaining drive. You might be lucky and have minimal damage if you haven't driven it much like that.

The gear rotation direction (think about it) means they would throw stuff up and out, not drag it in. My bet is still a partly stripped 2nd gear & cluster gear. Very common prob among you young blokes...

well initially i was sure it had stripped teeth, because it felt the same as when the diff went but only in 2nd gear. but then no teeth came out and this washer did.

i know its possible the reason for the gear failure is the washer getting caught in the gear, but where is the washer from?

There's always the possibility its a foreign object left in the casing from the last re-build. Or something used to bodge the last re-build, and now the chickens have come home to roost!
Start stripping and put us out of our misery
