Well, I'd like to know where that info comes from.
I've gone into a fair bit of detail in the next mag, but suffice to say, the Leyland comprehensive workshop manual states; "The identification plate was deleted from some Saloon Models in June 1969".
However, we were able to find a Mk1 Cooper S from April 1969 which had neither ID plate or compliance plate, and had no holes drilled in the bulkhead for the plate.
I would have thought the holes would be drilled when the plate was attached, but this is an interesting point. If the holes were drilled during the production of the shell, before painting, then it is possible they could fill with paint - but then they would have to find and re-drill the holes to fit the plate, which sounds like too much double handling.

All the Australian Morris 1100 shells have all the UK ID plate holes even though they were not used and even though the panels were stamped in Australia.
Maybe the Minis were drilled when the shell was made. Maybe they stopped drilling them on a certain point but the shells were not used in consecutive order.
I found a Service Bulletin on the
Sprite Club webpage.Quote:
SLS 169 2.5.1969
From Midget Car No. 1043, ID Plates Deleted. Car No. now stamped on body on LHS Dash Panel.
One would think that there must be a service bulletin for the Minis as well? From what I can see BMC documented everything. The problem was when David Abell ordered everything to be thrown out.
