It's an odd one... It might be there was simply not enough surface area in the steel section there to shunt away 200-350 amps of current all at once. Or not enough spot welds and clean metal joins. So it shed it off onto anything which conducted.

There probably should be a grommet around the brake line there to stop rubbing, also the current and obvious sparks at that point has eroded the pie or the metal or both. Might need to have that line looked at lest it let go under strong braking.

It will be replaced. The grommet was put back when it was rebuilt - but obviously has gone. I will check and replace/refit all the others - just another wake up call from Mr Moke

For some reason the current decided the quickest path to earth was through the brake pipe. These things happen.

My brother had a Ford Galaxie in which the head lights went dim when you lifted your foot off the accelerator and went bright when you put your foot down. This sounds like a voltage regulator problem until you realise that it would do the same thing with the motor switched off!
The earth strap was missing between the body and the engine and the accelerator cable was acting as a variable resistance earth cable.

I have a old friend that let his mate have a drive in his Mk 2 Cooper S years ago, he overcooked it and hit the bank and the car rolled and ended up on its roof. Both the guys had to get out quickly as fuel was leaking into the car and soaking into the headlining and there hair. They got out and were sitting on the side of the road when the boot lid flew open and the car burst into flames. the battery wasnt secured and in the crash, while the car was upside down the battery fell out of its hole, pulled the positive terminal of the cable and then was hanging off the short earth strap with the pos terminal welding itself to the RH petrol tank. the heat from the fire melted the gearbox case. Only the wheels survived and are now used on a race car trailer.

sure does...

when I crashed my blue one - the right hand fuel tank took the brunt of the impact and split open, but the battery box also shifted over, it pulled the earth strap off the battery... so when I was mostly unconscious and upside down in a pool of fuel, there wasn't a lot of danger of bursting into flames
