Yes, it would be more interesting if Jess said there was some vibration followed by a loud bang, her diff was broken, she had drained her sump and found a lot of swarf.

Jess, Diff's (Diferentials) are complicated things, most of the blokes on here wouldn't be able to describe how they work!

Think about your Mini going around a corner, the inner wheel travels less distance than the outer, a solid axle would do wierd things to the handling!

The diff allows for continued drive to the wheels and to compensate in the speed / distance 'differential' of the inner and outer wheel.

Does that help? :?

Not as raunchy as what Matt said!

So much smut.
Now i must go to confession

going gently around a left-hand corner near work this morning and it felt like something in the steering let go, it tried to keep going straight

My car did that once.

simon k wrote:
I got it around the corner and pulled up, switched the engine off and looked over the front end and everything was in place.

I didn't make it around the corner at first, i stopped to turn right across traffic and couldn't get moving until at 5-6000 rpm and a heavy clutch drop it moved, whilst spitting the broken cross pin and 5L of hot oil out the bottom of the gearbox all over the road.

simon k wrote:
I remembered what Doogie said about the last time his diff broke in a motorkhana, he had full drive on one wheel, the car just wanted to go in one direction - same kind of feeling.

Mine felt normal after punching the hole in the gearbox.

simon k wrote:
I probably shouldn't have, but I started the engine again put it in 1st gear and tried to move it - had drive, no noises, but now it's jammed in 1st gear

bugger! gotta pull it all apart again

No jammed gears in mine.

I wasn't popular for staying up till 2am swapping engines over.

Mine did it too once, although I didn't give it the boot and didn't drop its guts all over the road  One flat bed later...

when you pull the box to pieces it might be time for a few bits like these for it

a quaffe diff out of a honda integra with double helical gears and good cv's
the do fit with a very small amount [less than a milimeter] out of the casing. There are std taper rollers to fit from 40mm carrier to 3" mini casing.
Then you go for a taper roller brg replacement for the pinion and in-put brgs. at least these will take some loads.
