Channel 11 is designated as the "Call Channel" to allow you to call other stations, however in many city areas local repeaters are used as the local call channel as they provide wider coverage.

Channel 40 is used Australia wide as the "Road Channel" extensively used by Truck Drivers for safety communications and traffic updates however due to interference between the New England and Pacific Highway communications, truck drivers between Sydney and Brisbane use channel 29 if they are travelling via the Pacific Highway.

Users should not use channels 31 to 38 as they are the automatically selected "Transmit" channels for repeaters on channels 1 to 8. Users who wish to use a repeater should choose a channel between 1 and 8 and press their "Duplex" button,

Awesome info thanks scott. 8) :D

I have this antenna http://www.dse.com.au/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/4a9783f600d62748273fc0a87e0106a9/Product/View/D4007, and its currently mounted on the side guard where the original radio antenna is, its a 178cm antenna. Had good reception over a known 7 km's or there abouts so far. The 400sx is a 5watt UHF, the guy at the 4x4 place said i should get 20-30km range from it. Maybe i should look at a 4.5db antenna for use around the city.

Say Everybody have you seen my balls, their big and salty and brown. If you ever need a quick pick me up, just stick my balls in your mouth. --- CHEF!!!

If you want to improve the range you really need to drill a hole in the middle of the roof. Anything else is just a waste of effort.

Drexxle, I'm interested in why you are going UHF. Seeing you're foraying out into the wild sticks, I would have thought the longer wavelength of the VHF or HF wavelengths would have been your choice?

Long term benefits, i bought a handheld pack as well. Ill only be in the outback for a short time, probably 6-8weeks. All those caravan towing grey nomads use UHF as well, and there are plenty of them in the outback. Ill be able to use the radio when i go on a run in the years to come, and i can give handheld to a mate if he doesnt have in car unit.

I saw a VHF unit on sale but it was gone when i bought mine, and they were three times the cost.

I have put a roof cage and racks on the car, so i will look into a mount that can bolt to the side of the cage, i could run a cable up the windscreen pillar and along the cage from the mount at the original radio antenna hole. Then i can have the best of both worlds, a spot to mount when the cage is off, and a spot on the cage to mount when im using it.
