Now I wouldn't recommend it but,

and it IS only done in an emergency,

AND it will probably lead to the wrath of many mechanics

Buuuut,

If you don't have a puller, I saw a guy once in the same predicament put a sturdy piece of timber onto the back of the flywheel via the starter motor hole.
He bashed at it with an equally sturdy hammer once or twice, rotate the flywheel 1/3rd of a turn and repeated. After about 5 turns the flywheel popped off.
No piece of timber and hammer would approach my machine though.
Far too dodgy.

We were going to lighten Chong's spare flywheel, until we saw all the bruise marks on the back, where people had been hitting it with a VBFH and NO block of wood, but a lump of steel instead!
So I gave him another one..

Cast iron is brittle stuff- hit it hard enough, and it'll crack. Then if you rev it enough, it'll blow apart... and you have a front row seat!

A decent (ie thick) puller is the kindest way to get it off the crank.

Yeah make your own is the best bet - tho the Docs 20mm plate is a bit over kill :)

Mine only uses 1/4"

The pullers you can buy aren't worth their weight in scrap metal IMO

In 40 years this puller hasn't yet failed to get a flywheel off... works for me!
Plate needs to be at least 1/2" thick...

someone once showed me that you can bash on the end of the crankshaft bolt, I tried it, it worked, but I'm not gonna do it again..... wasn't a happy experience, I don't think any damage was done, but still... go the puller

If you can't get another rod, drop the one I gave you back down & let me know how long you want it to be :-p
