I flush the whole system with metho - basically fill it all up with metho, leave it in there a few days, drain it, flush it again then run clean fluid through - amazing amount of gunk comes out

I thought that the 15/16 cylinders had a slightly different bolt pattern to the 1 inch ones. The cylinders need to match the backing plate, unless you want to file out the backing plate holes to match the other cylinders. Early Minis were 1 inch, and latter ones were 15/16. Changeover was in the early clubman range somewhere. I could be wrong as it is a long time since I have played with front drums.

I recently did some wheel cylinders on a clubman that had 1" cylinders in there, so I replaced them with new 1" cylinders - still had to file the holes a bit

I think the backing plates are all the same, it's the aftermarket cylinders' bolt spacing that is the problem.

There is nothing wrong with the wheel cylinders.

In about 1974 Leyland changed the stud pattern and backing plates when they introduced 15/16" wheel cylinders to replace the 1" wheel cylinders.

To stop people replacing a 1" cylinder with a 15/16" cylinder Leyland changed the stud pattern slightly. This was a safety measure.

People are too quick to always blame the replacement part.

Why did they change the wheel cylinder size? Were the brakes too good with 1" ones??

I got an email from karcraft this morning mentioning standard drums and wide drums to suit flares , which has me a little confused.

Will standard drums with A08's fit under my gaurds " no flares needed " ?

And is there any benefit from the wide drums over standard ?

Cheers Bill

The `wide' aka spacer drums are same as Cooper S rear ones. They will give you the same track as a Cooper S. Were used front & back on Clubby S (which all had flares).

Whether legal without flares depends on the wheels. eg LS offset Contessas would be fine, standard Mini offset Contessas would not.

Internally, the drums whether `wide' (spacer type) or not are all the same diameter & width.

Dearest parts on brakes are the back plates and the spings that go on the front wheel cylinders

If your gonna use the plastic .700 master cylinder get the 15/16 wheel cylinders as 1' wheel cylinders dont work the best on a .700 master cylinder

I changed every thing from the master cylinder down

Im just waiting for the handbrake levers smu10005 <a> have they come in mr karcraft they were on back order they there yet

And you'll need some longer wheel studs if you have the standard short ones

I've got a Clubman S and I was just about to order new rear drums and I read this. I've got really small flares on the clubman, but they're still flares nonetheless.
Would I go for the Cooper S wide drums or stick to the conventional ones? Any idea of the dimensions I can check on my old drums to see what I've got currently?

your car *should* have wide drums - really easy to tell the difference. If your existing drums have a 1" thick bit poking out of the drum where the wheel bolts on, then they're the wide ones - the wide drums just push the wheel 1" further out on each side
