@Mick and others,
be aware the ACL Monotorque smallbore gasket is no more, since ACL went belly up.

I'm not sure what one now is/was 2nd best, if somebody knows please post it here.

I wonder what gasket the 998/1098 turbo dudes are using now.. as the ACL Monotorque was da bomb for these.

There's a place in St Mary's (TJ's or Teejays Performance from memory) that is pretty good at heads as well.
Kurrajong avenue, but the St Mary's side, not the Mt Druitt side.

I was initially alarmed at that too, but it is just a polish mark.
All he bores are nice and smooth with no ridges at the top.
The "rust" on number 3 was only build up from the mud in water and came off with almost no effort.

Update
Installed the refurbed head (skimmed, recut valve seats and valves).
Drained and changed the oil and filter and refilled the radiator with coolant.
Started the engine and all seamed good.
Wen't for a short drive and the engine felt better than ever before.
Almost home and we could smell hot oil :?
Pulled up in the drive with engine running and fumes were coming out of the rocker cover breather.
Shut down and it ran on again.
Infrared temperature on head was 130c and radiator was 86c.
Let it cool down and the radiator was almost empty again. Topped it up.
Pulled the plugs out and did a compression test. Plugs were nice and clean.
#1, 120psi
#2, 120psi
#3, 110psi
#4, 120psi

Is it a cooling system issue (blocked radiator, dud thermostat, water pump).
Would a really hot engine cause the fuming as the compression is OK so no blowby from the rings.

Lost

Did you flush the cooling system? Replace thermostat?
Probably should have run straight water for the initial run in and make sure there was no air locks in the cooling system before the test drive.

Pulled the thermostat out and hung it in a pot of water.
Slowly heated to boiling point and the thermostat didn't open :(
Oh we'll, at least I now have the problem solved :D
What temperature thermostat should I buy ?

when you change head gaskets it is a good idea not to run with coolant for a while as it can cause leaks while the gasket is bedding in, thermostat temp cant help with

I use an 82C. I used to use a 74C, but then the heater worked like cr@p in winter.
An 88C is a bit hot IMO. OK for Pommyland...

Just tested the new thermostat.
Started opening at ~82 C and was fully open at ~86 C. As the water cooled it was fully closed at ~75 C.
Will test it in the car tomorrow night.
