It's supposed to be a 1966 - in that case should it have a 970cc? Twin tanks came standard in 1966 so they might be ok.

66s is spot on, it should also have upper and lower dash vinyle fitted, also if it were a 66 it should be hydro and certanly not 970.

Personaly I would say that the only way to authenticate without a doubt IS to get a heritage cert, this will give you CC rating, colours, date built, date dispatched, extras, and where it was registered and also if it were for export, an english cooper S is'nt worth a toss without one, and there is no reason for not being able to aquire one for a mk1.
Heritage certs have been known to be wrong but generally give you enougth facts to base buying an authentic car.

Although, to me it shouts either badly restored OR clone!

As Matt says that looks like a 1275 block to me, look at the height at the corner, below the heater tap.
970 and 1071 blocks are 3/8" shorter.

The over spray on the door strikers certainly makes you wonder if its had a touch up spray or accident repair at some stage. Thats not a problem if its been properly done.

The door strikers should be painted body colour, this is often thought to be incorrect but that is how they were built....average I know!

They did live up to their name though, as soon as you hit water, your car would take off like a jet and try and kill you! :mrgreen:

You said 9F-SA - 7 42346. This can't be right so some people have turned the "7" into an "X" to make it a 970 motor.
I would probably assume the "7" is a "Y" which would make it a 1275.

It works like...
970 = X
1070 = H
1275 = Y

I don't think it does.
`9F SA' was prefix to 997 Cooper, 970S, 1071S, and Mk1 1275S.
There is a letter missing... if X it is a 970, H is a 997 or 1071, Y is a 1275...

Taken from p50 of my John Parnell Cooper & S book.

I was wondering how long it would take for the x to be a y :wink: , as it probably should be

It would be easy to mistake the Y for a 7? Which would mean it is a 1275?
