I'd hate to see what it cost him but

Sounds like the tandem from tilta, I can get the base model of that delivered down here with no extra for just under $7500  (think i would rather get another mini)

Unless you are carrying other much bigger cars a single axle for a mini is fine mate, much lighter, easy to move around, $2500-$4500 will get you a good one, just check those measurements to be safe than sorry remember you car might be a different height to other minis :D

I have been asking for a generic height for the door as I will have more than just the one mini to move so I figured there was no real point in making sure it was exactly to the dimension of my current mini (which isn't here at the moment) but so far no one has offered an actual measurement. I am pretty sure I won't be getting the deluxe airbag model just to move my mini's, though it would be nice I am absolutely positive I won't be able to convince SWMBO that it is a required purchase.

So far my research is making me lean towards a custom made tilt trailer with a hydraulic assist which is a combination from a few trailer I have seen so far which I will discuss with my local engineer. Being in Adelaide seems to add a motza to the cost of anything from interstate so local built seem to be the best option for now but I will keep looking.

A few asking about door height: another way of skinning that cat is trailer width. As above the deck on mine is 1.8m between the wheels, which is wide enough to allow opening of the doors.

That is a consideration, there is an option to go to a 2m wide deck if desired but it comes at a price and that is mainly weight. When I was talking to the guy who built my last trailer today that was one of the options he suggested as most of his full sized car carriers are a 2m deck. He also suggested going to a 12" rim to lower the guards though it would mean in his opinion a shorter deck would be a must as it would be prone to bottoming out.

It is a shame no one has designed a purpose built mini carrier

I've towed a lot of trailers and it's much better and less stressful when you don't have to keep a constant eye on the trailer sideswiping everything in your path due to additional width.

Try driving down parramatta rd strathfield some time and you'll se what I mean.

yeah I know that feeling, besides the other reason for keeping the trailer more mini only size will be also to limit the amount of times I get called upon to move uncle bob or aunty marys clapped out falcodore etc because unfortunately it won't fit on the trailer............ Seems to be one of the down sides to owning a car trailer that you can suddenly become the local towing service?

There's one on Gumtree that got listed today for $2600 in the Adelaide Hills. 8 years old, homemade, tilt tray, looking at the photos the sides may be a bit high for the door to clear. Not mine by the way but thought it may be worth a look. Having trouble posting the link but if you search for
Car Trailer for sale, tilting - Adelaide you should find it

Well I took a drive into adelaide today and measured the first four random minis I found plus a racing mini at a mates and found all were greater than 200mm from the ground to the chrome trim strip so I will use that as the guide for the guards. If I keep it to that even a door with badly sagging hinges should still clear ok.

Don't forget that a car may have clearance when empty but could be a little lower with a driver on board.

That's why I went to the chrome trim and not the bottom of the door. There was another 50mm to door from the trim on the cars I measured so I was hoping I left enough leeway.

If a car is just a little too low you can always stick a bit of ply or timber under the front wheel to lift it a touch.

Is that the bit missing over the wheel arch?

Well 10" wheels and using a soft rubber reinforced with steel mesh wheel arch.

the guy was using it for a lotus 7 replicant and it simply drove on the trailer tyres.

The green trailer behind the falcon wagon in one of the photos I think is the MrSnot trailer.
He had a build thread on a lotus7 replica site and the trailer was really well engineered (as was his Lotus7 rep race car) and quite well known in clubman racing circles.
I was thinking of getting something similar built before I ended up buying my tilt trailer.

KB

I happen to have a set of snot plans on file . . . . . . .

I have a single axle Tilta-Trailer which I bought second hand in excellent nick for $2200. I took it back to the factory where they lowered the RHS mudguard so that a Mini door will open without any problems. Even the door on the race car doesn't foul it.

Also, I agree with the earlier comment about the integrity of the lever mechanism for releasing the tilt, so I use a safety strap on the opposite side just in case it lets go whilst driving.

All up a great trailer that tows like a dream on 14" light truck tyres.

Richard
