Toluene or methyl benzene is not carcinogenic. Besides having a great Octane Number, it is a brilliant solvent. It WILL dissolve fuel lines and rubber gaskets etc if used in some of the ratios mentioned above. Ditto Benzene, however Benzene IS carcinogenic...
Quote from Health Canada (Canadian Ministry of Health) ....".The weight of evidence indicates that toluene is not genotoxic in mammalian or microbial systems. It has been classified, therefore, in Group IV-C (probably not carcinogenic to man) of the classification scheme developed for use in the derivation of the "Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality" (EHD, 1989)."
Somewhere else there's a disconcerting note to the effect that "abuse" of toluene can cause "testicular atrophy". I don't know what constitutes abuse ..but it doesn't sound like a good idea..
The fact that its not too bad is good news as its a major constituent of Oz motor fuel. However, as noted previously, it has a significant effect on rubber which means the proportion needs to be pretty stable. Too much and your fuel lines go soggy - and fall off. Too little and fuel lines can dry out ...and fall off

A few years ago there was a spate of engine fires in NZ that was traced to a bad batch of fuel out of Singapore ... too much toluene. But the octane was good
