I just bought mine off John it did need slight modification ie the water bottle holes and also a trim around the wiper motor but appart from that it fit. Let's face it all the mini parts only kind of fit. They were hand built 50 years ago then modified over and over again.

This appears to be the material they use

I am processing a refund for you today. There is no need to return the offending part.
I don't hold stock of the base material.

I think if you were truly determined to make your own you would need to buy the vinyl and backing separately and glue it yourself.

At one stage I was considering doing this because (if you want to be really fussy) the original Australian ones from the period of my car had a finer grain in the vinyl.

Hi Philip,

You are correct when you say that the original material was different, yes it was a finer grain and was backed with
different material than anything I have been able to buy these days.

It becomes very difficult to reproduce some items, because the materials used 30 plus years ago is
is not always available now days. In some cases it can be reproduced but the cost v demand has to be considered

Yes totally understand John. Also as you know there were so many minor changes over the years in materials and minor items it would be next to impossible to cover everything. 98% of people are simply interested in an item performing the function intended rather than being an exact visual replica.

Hmm. I have a feeling you are trying to position it up too high. Remember that the slit for the hinge needs to be low enough so that the hinge arm goes down though the slit. Up too high it will jam and damage hot bonnet and hinge. The bottom edge of the blanket curves and covers the square section that runs across the firewall. Part of the idea is to help direct water over this section. The top edge normally just curves up and slips behind the front edge of the scuttle panel.

Below is the end of the original insulation blanket from my MK II S, to suit the 12AUW wiper motor. By cutting a similar shape out of the MKO item it should fit and I think would look OK for most situations. The existing recess in the mat (for a Mark 1 wiper motor) should be mostly hidden from view by the wiper motor itself. I guess it just depends on how far people are prepared to go for an original look. I know some Mini owners simply want to cut down the engine bay noise and don't want to mess around making their own so an off-the-shelf product may suit their needs.

For pure cost reasons I can understand Mini spares businesses being reluctant to have insulation mats, carpet sets, underlay, etc. tailored to every possible situation to suit the full range of Australian assembled Minis. A quick search of online stores shows Minisport SA selling one style firewall mat for all Mini models with instructions "...will fit any model mini, all you do is get to it with a knife.". You can see the style Minis Plus sell via the link earlier in this thread. MKO has its solution.

Without these organisations Australian Mini enthusiasts would be much worse off so we should support them where we can. Of course the option to go to a professional motor trimmer is always there, but you usually pay a premium for the privilege and still may not get the desired quality.

Hope this helps. :)

Thanks for the photo Doug. I noticed in the bottom right of the photo it is cut out a bit. Is that to go around the heater hoses?

Yes, well spotted. I take it your left and right is from inside the car? :D

Here's a photo I took some time ago. The bit on the driver's side end has detached and is missing in this shot. Note the inclusion of a flap to access an ID plate (not used on MK II) or probably paint sticker. I haven't lined it up to confirm which.

275 mm. Probably a bit wider originally before shrinkage over time.
