You might want to go to the trouble of cleaning up the inner guards while they are exposed. Underneath all that rough stuff you can find all sorts of dramas. I found rust holes in mine after wire-brushing it back to bare metal - they werent visible before doing that.
Also makes it better to look at when the front flips away, having it clean and painted.....
You can see one of the holes where the spot welds are along the bottom edge, underneath a previous repair job, where the everyday tyre spray would land... And yes, I have continued doing the whole thing since taking this picture.
