to be honest i dont see the problem
my brakes look pretty much like that
and the fronts were even leaking alittle on the weekend.
after a car wash with recycling bin water they squeaked a hell of alot.
just drove with the brakes on and after the water (and fluid) steamed and burned off, things are just like normal

whats the problem with your brakes MC

 serious dude?!?! what are you gonna do if/when one of the wheel cylinders lets go? you wont have any pedal pressure and will be relying on the handbrake to stop ya! leaking brake fluid is a sign that the seals in the wheel cylinders are on the way out....not very safe

there were only a couple of drips on the cylinder, i bled them that same day so im not sure where it came from
brake fluid level doesnt go down, no more smells of burnt fluid,
but ill get someone to have a look at them soon, thanks

can you explain the pictures for me?

Not to mention the possibility that one or more wheel cylinder can dump fluid onto your brake shoes, causing them to swell and/or "grab" or worce "slip" which can result in a violent spin out under moderate to heavy braking  :?

68matic The car doesn't actually dive at the moment, so i thought i'd check over the car and catalogue the things i need to fix and when i looked at the brakes I saw what's in the pictures and it seemed wrong.. what i was asking about in the pictures was that the cylinder (piston?) was firmly stuck out... and that would give me "Single Leading Shoe Power (TM) " on the front right... would it not?

tommo: yeah i was thinking i'd have to swap it.. maybe i'll see if i can find one at wreckers.. ( alhtough i'm nt entirely sure how to remove it) :)

well just keep an eye on it for a few days to see if there's any more weeping from the wheel cylinders (thats the bit that pushes the brake shoes out onto the drum) if one of the pistons comes out of the cylinder (as in photo above) then there is no seal and hence nothing for the brake fluid to push against and it'll just seep out the sides and onto the brake shoes. not good

The shoes look missmatched to me in the pic. The upper looks like the wider variety found on twin leading brakes.. i found one on the rear passenger brake... they dont work too well as they are too wide and they dont sit perpandicular to the drum! not to mention dangerous. Also the piston shouldnt be out that far... either very worn shoe or very worn drum i would think? New wheel cylinders are only around $20-25.
