Hi giuys, the gregory's manual tells me to replace my steering rack oil (i drained it while replacing the boots).

where do i get SAE 90 EP oil from?

SAE90 is gear oil...same as what goes in a Holden diff for example. Repco should carry that.

BTW...I filled mine with grease. My theory was less liquid to drip onto my garage floor

Go to a reliable suspension/steering shop and beg, borrow or buy some proper rack grease. Just because your car was built in the past you don't have to condemn it to live there for ever..

I filled mine with grease after it was overhauled.
As JAM IT said no oil leaks.

The guys who built these Oz racks at Cam Gears in Sydney, I used to work with. They say OIL was better lube than grease, they went to using grease purely to reduce oil leaks. They recommend topping up with OIL, even on a grease packed rack.

Problem with grease is, it dries with age, the rack cuts a track thru it, then no lube.

90/140 is the oil grade if you can still get it.

Most (all??) modern cars use grease. There are special formulations intended purely for steering components. I was persuaded to use it when I installed my Mk II rack in the early 90s and last time I looked (around 2002) it was still pretty gooey.

As long as the boots are intact i can't see any volotile components escaping..and once the boots go, the dirt wil get in anyway. Although with grease the rack will probably survive longer than if the oil escapes.

OK I'll buy that, the grease they used in the distant past here was nothing special which is why I like oil.
BTW my 1970 rack is still in car, original, not sloppy yet- had 1 boot replaced in 36 years and 140,000 mlies approx. And regular 90EP oil top-ups...
