GRRRR. My speedo doesnt work. I have taken the 3 gauge cluster out and had a look behind... all seems well. The cable has a LOT of slack on it... it kept coming as much as i pulled it, i didnt want to pull it all out.

So one thinks taht the cable could be snapped.
How much is a new cable? and how hard is it to fit?

Will.

Pull the inner cable right out from the top. The bottom end will have a square on it. Either this may have broken off or the square has a groove worn around it.

Best to replace the whole cable if so, but if not broken off it's easier to just put a new inner cable in.
Put a bit of grease on the inner cable, but leave the top 150mm or so dry so it doesn't get into the speedo head.

In all the books they say that it is really hard to put in a new cable with the engine in the car

No, it's pretty easy really. All depends how tight the bottom nut is. Worst case- take the bottom hose off. Or, put it up on a hoist.

And don't cross thread the nut when putting it on...

I replaced Morris's Speedo cable last weekend, Pain :!: The old inner had rusted and broke. When replacing it I sprayed degreasier to the back of the engine and used a paint brush the get all the crud off the old bottom end of the cable.
Hope you have small hands, as its a tight fuit but can be done.
Make sure you dont make the same mistake as I did and not wash of the degreaser and burn my forearm replacing the cable.
But I was not able to just botom nut up Fkentight so I say its a couple of threads loose and thats the way it stays

If you ride motor cycles, you'll know that some chain lubes such as Chain Wax are also excellent for cables too.

On a murder sickle, cables means bowden cables - don't know how they'd go on a speedo cable. No reason to think they'd be no good.
