Being relatively new to mini's and not yhet owning one im unsure about acouple pf points, yet im looking at one on wednesday night and it is supposedly a clubman with a 1275 engine, and i know that you can tell the engine size off the engine number, but i was just wondering where on a mini's engine is that located and wat prefix's would i be looking for???

Engine number is stamped on top of cylinder block, below #1 spark plug.
All 1275s- the engine number starts with 12, except Cooper S.

99H/whatever is a common UK built 998 motor, Cush. NEVER a 1275.
first use of 99H here was on MiniMatic, it was 99H/119/H.

MiniMe87,
Just post the first half of the engine number and we will tell you what it is.
The same with the VIN or chassis number.

Also have a look under the carby/exhaust manifold , if there are no bolt on plates under there then it is an 1100S motor which is actually a 1275 (most common one in vehicles here now) , also a Cooper S motor (but not an 1100S motor) should have 2 extra head studs , 1 on either side of the rocker cover , 1 near the heater tap/outlet and the other sort of near the thermostat housing . Of course if it hasn't got a cooper S head they probably won't be there either . As morris1100 said though , get the engine number prefix and post it here and we'll tell you what it is . If it starts with a 12 it should be an 1100S , if it starts with a 9 it couls be a cooperS or a 998 cc motor , post everything before the numbers at the end and we'll sort it out .

" if there are no bolt on plates under there then it is an 1100S motor "

Hmmm, I've had 2 1100S engines now WITH the plates.....

Dont trust anything from Australian BMC or Leyland.. .there was no real quality control and almost ANYTHING came out of the factory.....

 No hard and fast rules I think...
