so the mini finally got painted this week..
so its time to start putting it back together..
but, with putting the doors on.. is there anything u can put between the hinges and the door? to kinda prevent rusting?
do i buy these things? make them out of something?
any help is good

There are 2 sorts of gasket-
One is a flat type made from gasket material, (from Karcraft)
Other is a moulded rubber one (I got from MG Heritage).

Not sure which is the Kosher one, I think the 1st type.

Interesting, i guess the flat one you can't see?

Did they have any from the factory? They wouldn't of had the rubber one as you can visibly see that and i've never seen it in any promo shots or on any restored or original cars..

Surely they put something there? ie. the flat gasket material?

I'm pretty sure it was just flat gasket-like material. But after 30+ years they are never intact.
The original hinges are actually cast iron, surprise surprise.. I know this `coz I've repinned and bushed some.

the rubber ones are the ones i have seen and am thinking of getting.. do you know the going rate for them??

I paid $2/gasket for the flat ones. Total =$16, pretty sure the rubber ones are dearer.

:shock: My doors went on without gaskets.

Should I take them off again. I painted the car with the doors on though so it could get messy. Argh. Why didn't I know this.

1. i think cars should be painted with hinges off (infact, everything off including seam covers)
2. rubber gaskets should be fitted... you risk too much with the thins

I would never give the Doc lip...but...AFAIR....the early deluxe hinges had the rubber/neoprene affair with the lip around it.

You might be right Mick, I canna remember what my `61 850 had, but my 70 `matic had remnants of the flat ones inside.. :wink:

The body and add ons (doors bonnet and boot) were originally painted separately then assembled with gasket paper type gaskets under the hinges (similar to those now available from various suppliers). They then had a final finish coat applied
When the Rota Dip process was discontinued in the early seventies the cars were assembled from panels with cathodic coating (also using gasket paper type gaskets) then painted using an electostatic process which was supposed to coat the whole car. As seen by the rust under the hinges on most clubmans the end result wasnt very succesfull
The rubber type gaskets are aftermarket and dont attract moisture so tend to minimise the rust problem

Thats gold Ken....this advice should be a stickey on Ausmini....so...does anyone know if you can get the neoprene/rubber/aftermarket/lipped gasket thingys in Oz :?:

Hmmmm it came back to me in a blinding light....I think I can now remember fitting the after market rubbers to my first car (Deluxe)....and helping some others do the same. Think I got em from a little parts shop on Illawarra Road in Marrickville....does that suburb still exist :lol:
