I've just joined the VMCI and was wondering how many members here race their cars at a Club level?

Do the vehicles need modifying ie: seat belts, bonnet straps to be able to go onto the tracks?

A road car needs a fire extingisher securerly fitted, secure battery, 2 throttle return springs, if its road registed it does'nt need a 2nd bonnet restraint, thats it basically, as long as its road worthy you should be right. Plus you need a helmet & wrist to anlke clothing & close in non sythetic shoes, no strappy high heels sorry.

I have a slight oil leak under the engine (most mini's do as i'm told) would this be rejected through scrutineering?

Nah, just give it a quick wipe. It doesn't leak that much really. I've seen some oily cars go through scruitineering!!

If you ever venture down to the Gippsland Car Club hillclimb LB, I will let our scrutineer know about that oil leak..

Btw, the VMCI do hire our track every now and then and next time they will be down here will be Sept. Sunday 17...

Clean engine with brake cleaner before scrutineering to removed any oil. (you can get it from Repco for about $5 a can).

Make sure your brakes and tyres are A1 before going anywhere near a track. If either of these fail life will get very interesting very quickly.

You may want to invest in an old race suit. Changes were made a few years ago that superseded race suits that were CAMS national standard. They are still fireproof just not upto standard for full out and out racing. If you can pick one up cheaply they are much better than woollen clothing.

Road registed cars do need the sump plug wired, not sure about the tow hook, good point though.

as long as you're just doing club level events - motorkhanas, autocrosses, sprints and hillclimbs, nothing needs to be done to the car - if you'd drive it on the road, then it's no problem driving it on the track - I know where I feel the safest. No need for the sump plug wired, tow hitch, roll cage etc.

For Motorkhanas, you and the car have to be basically roadworthy - no helmets etc.

To race in speed events (anything other than a motorkhana) you need a minimum 900 gram fire extinguisher with a metal securing bracket (so the extinguisher doesn't melt into the braket). You need an AS1698 helmet ($75 at a motorbike shop) and wrist to ankle non-synthetic clothes (jeans and a wool/cotton top)

EDIT: you do need the second independent bonnet securing device - I put a bit of rope through the safety catch bracket and tie it to the subframe... (the standard bonnet catch and safety catch constitute a single securing device)

Cams 2006 Competitor Handbook-National Rules.
Page 59 General Requirements for Cars and Drivers.
Although,small print on bottom of page states that registered for road cars competing in speed events(not racing) will not be required to comply with sub-section 2,3,5,8,7 and 11.
Speed events do need h/lghts and indicators covered by transparent tape/film.
Also Blue triangle indication position of battery.
Only just recieved this 2006 Rule Book.
