Hi All.

Just finished off the engine with new head gasket among other things.

Been driving it a few days now, and have a build up of the milky stuff on the oil cap. The head gasket is NEW, and was put on correctly, and car runs fine with no bad noises or stuttering or anything like that.

What else can cause this milky build up ?

btw, my breather hose from tappet cover to carbie had a weird build up of slugdey crap in it (guessing from before repairs). Can a restricted breather hose cause the build up ?

If you blew the head gasket my guess is that you still have residual water in your oil. It took a flush or two for mine to come clean after i had the same issue. Could be as easy as another oil change, along with a new filter too.

Remember also Max that since the cold weather is set in, the car may not be getting warm enough(funny to say that about a mini!!)to boil off the moisture in the oil. It is a by-product of the combustion process. A change of the oil will set you right. If the car is still getting condensation, do what I do and block off part of your grille to restrict the airflow and warm the car up a bit more(I have perspex on half the grille and temp now about 1/3 on the guage.

I still get condensation though but is in the form of clear droplets and not mayo and water.

Yep just a buil.d up of moister. giver her a oil change and also the oil filter as mentioned above.

Too many short runs...
A litre of fuel produces ~1.5L of H2O when burned, as water vapour. Some gets past the rings and condenses on cold bits of the engine.
Mixes with oil film to form `mayo'.
One of the coldest bits happens to be the rocker cover.
Take it for a long run, and when it all gets up to temp, I bet the muck all boils off.

i had the same problem untill i hooked up the breather on top of the motor to the carbie no more mayo and the motor seems to run a bit smoother

I have just returned the breathers back to standard on my car and no mayo!

This is a bit of spectulative diagnosis

I think that the mayo settles on the high points in a motor - a bit light the boiling kettle in the kitchen leaves condensation on the ceiling and the shower condensates on the walls and ceiling in winter.

In the motor, in winter, the mayo also settles on the high points of the motor and is not actually in circulation. As soon as the motor comes up to temperature the water content boils off and the oil falls back in the sump.

My question is - does it do any damage ad is it worth the worry.

I truly don't know so hence the question.

I believe mayo is just a sign of poor crankcase ventilation.
Neither of our 1275s get it, even on short runs- which mine does 3 of a week.
One motor has crankcase breather piped to a PCV in the Weber manifold, the other has it piped to the vac ports on its twin HS4 SUs.

I have a spare teppet cover with a breather pipe coming out of it...might hook it up and wack a cheap filter on the end.

but when you means stuttering does it like do that when you try to accelerate, even down hill....

i am having that problem constantly, sometimes will dissapear for awhile but always is there?

i ment would the car stutter and stuff if the head gasket was blown? ?

because thats what mine is constantly doing....? trying to eliminate problems

Well at least I can rest easy then if this is considered "normal".

I'd never had this problem, until my rebuild. I not 'm loosing any water, compression is all even so I was guessing this was the reason for the build up. However I already have the rockercover breather plumbed backinto the carby inlet?
