I've gotta Triumph Stag/ jaguar E Type/ former Cooper S enthusiest here who on espying the Pulsar Dizzy upgrade in my mini is a little incredulous to see that a GT40R can be used without a ballast resistor for the whole time the engine is running.

I've had a search through the previous posts and hven't found anything that would answer his questions.

Did the Pulsars use ballast resistors at all, and what are the down sides for using a 1.5 ohm "R" coil that would make a ballast resistor a requirement in some installations?

Also what does the conversion do to the current draw of a standard ignition system? obviously as it is 1/2 the resistance, it must draw about twice the current, has anyone had to install a relay in the ignition system yet?

Pulsar N12 with Hitachi electronic dizzys used a Jap 1.5 ohm coil standard, with NO ballast resistor.
It just happens to be the same resistance as a GT40R.

Some other electronic ign systems use a 1.1 ohm or even less.
No big deal.
Ballast resistors are used in POINTS ignitions, not electronic.

<edit> the current draw is probably greater, but for how long is the question. They don't seem to get hot, as they do in a points system with no ballast resistor.

yeah the honda dizzys i built, i ran gt40r coils with them without a resistor.
