Question: In the ideal engine , does the water jacket completely surround the cylinder bores?

While cleaning out the solid crud in the motor at the weekend I noticed that some of the wires that were use to hold the sand cores together during casting were still poking out from between 1&2 and 3&4 and as a result solid rusty material closing the gap between these cylinders. Obviously this would inhibit water flow in these areas and not cool as effectively.

Point to Ponder: Could some of the "hotter" running engines out there be a result of poor removal of manufacturing artifacts and is there anything that can be done about it?

always get the block & head hot tanked, it'll clean out that rusty crud.

Yes you are right! if it looks bad in there then it probably is!

My block looked great inside, until I washed it about half a dozen times and it started to go orange

In the ideal engine it does. In the A series it doesn't.

Smallbore blocks are cast in 2 siamese pairs, 1-2 and 3-4. water only between 2 and 3.
The bigbores have NO water between the bores- it's one lump of iron....!

Wombat, the bits of wire are called chaplets, they were to support the sand cores during casting.
Often when overboring a block you hit one, no big deal.
