I presume you're referring to one in the flywheel housing! There is a proper puller that will do the job and most Mini specialist workshops will carry it. Other methods include removing the rollers and cutting the casing through with a dremel tool, or if it's not too tight try filling the bearing up with a heavy grease like that used for wheel bearings, and tap the idler gear shaft into the grease-filled bearing with a soft hammer. The grease will push the bearing out - it's worked occasionally for me.

I use a method passed down to me by a couple of nice old Mini repairers who used to run Telltune (Seven Hills).
I take a 3/8" bolt, position it so the head is just inside the idler bearing, and give it 6 or 8 quick tack weldss with the MIG.
Then I put an 850 diff drive flange over it, fit a nut and washer and wind it out.

You are going to bin the bearing anyway, so no matter it now has a bolt attached.
But being a skinflint I grind the bearing off the bolt, & save bolt for next time! :P

To remove the other idler one in the gearbox casing, I use a piece of 1/2" threaded rod, some nuts and my socket selection.
After I get those 2 circlips out...

Timely - I'll be doing that at the weekend - does it have to be MIG or can a stick do the job?

MIG. :)
Arc weld it and you'll blow the bearing shell away, and burn the housing....
