Hey all,
ive got an annoying rattly noise that i cant figure out what it is. Its metalicy sounding and is sorta a mix between if you shook a tin of spray paint and if you swriled it (so the ball bearing inside spins around the tin). It happens at a certain rev point in 2nd and 3rd and pretty much after i put my foot on the clutch for relaxed gear changes. Ive tried to replicate it whilst parked with the bonnet up but cant get the smae results. Ive checked that my grill isnt shaking and that everything else in the engine bay is tight. Do clutches make a noise like that or maybe the timing chain?

Sounds like the clutch release bearing, try and adjust the clutch, this might get rid of it if it is just too close to the diaphram, but it will probably need replacing soon.

Random thoughts:

Got a can of paint in the car?
Wheel bearing (since it's when moving only)?
I don't know what a slack chain sounds like. But you might be onto something.
Speedo cable? Solution is re-oil it or get newy.
Any loose wiring or cables in the engine bay that could be vibrating?

checked all this multiple times,. no luck there

Mine made a similar noise before I changed the timing chain (noise at a certain rev range).

Sounds exhaust related to me.
Resonant frequency at a cetain rev range.


That's my guess.

Do you have the return spring on the clutch arm?

I never run the spring, and it makes a very unique, light kinda rattle sound. Nowadays i remove the bracket, too.

i'd tighten anything you can see first before opening anything up...

door seals, hinges, windows, bonnet, boot battery, badges, everything..

couls also be the bonnet stay... You know the rod that holds the bonnet up... Try tapeing it up then take it for a drive.... Try everything simple first... Chances are it will be something silly.
