If the charge light blinked a bit then stayed on it's probably just the brushes are worn. $20 maybe at an auto electrician.
On most Lucas ones with the plastic back cover, you can remove and replace them without stripping the alternator apart.

That just means that the alternator isn't charging the battery yet, the volts at the regulator haven't reached a point where it is higher than the battery output voltage.

When you rev the engine, the volts rise and the regulator cuts the battery into the circuit, charging current is detected and the light goes out.

What kind have you got, if you run more electrical crap it might be an idea upgranding to a more powerful alternator. I got a Nissan Pulsar alternator (N15) it's rated at 70amps. I never draw that much but it's good to know it can keep up. Unlike my old 34amp Lucas one.

Should it still be alright?

This will fix your problem. I have only one left. It is the Lucas style alternator same as the one used on Rover Minis. Brand new 65 AMPS it will fit straight on to your Mini using same belt and bolts. This is a must especially if you have a big sound system or driving lights. $165.00 plus postage.
