Im just trying to identify an engine i have sitting in my workshop, any advice i can get would be helpful.

The block has very few markings except a 12a497 on the side with a stamped number 1015/5164 on the top face,

The head has no markings were they should be except a ECAM4004 on one end and up near the waterpump end it has 4 C7 or a 4 G7 that i couldnt quite make out, this didnt match up with any book or online reference.

I then measured the bore it was 62.45ish with the vernier and the stroke was 81.5 also with vernier so might be a few thou off, this matches up with a early 997cc cooper.

is there any other marks or identification i can look for?

Any help with this mystery would be most appreciated

John

I believe the 12a497 casting was common to all smallbores, 997 to 1098. Can anyone else confirm that?
A 1015/ series engine number is a late Oz 1098, up until circa-1975.
I think the CAM4004 was the smog head fitted to 998's?

Simon is correct... ^^^

It could have a 997 Cooper crank in it if that stroke is correct.
They are pretty much a 1098 crank dimensionally with slightly less stroke. No stronger, or weaker. Just rarer....

Unless that smog head has been well worked over with big valves, it will go better with a 12G202 (1098) head or better still a 12G295 (cooper 998) one.

Goldbrocade means does the block have a hole for a mechanical pump, or is the pump still bolted onto the back of the block?
:D
