Anyone know of reputable and Mini sympathetic speedo calabrators? Preferably in Brissy area but realise that such a specialised job may mean interstate.

I've had some correspondence with KC over speedo drives, MK1 speedos, 10" wheels and 3.44 diffs and he says the only way out will be to recalibrate the speedo.

Not sure about mini friendly but there's an instrument technician in the industrial estate in south Tweed heads who was brilliant with my Triton ute when I first got it . It was reading 18 klms slower than it should have been (thankyou for pointing it out mr policeman ..... got a certificate from teh instrument guy to say it was wrong etc but then I would have had to go to court to fight it and it was costing enough as it was ) .

Try Lionel Otto, they do a good job. Mine cost me $135 for a complete rebuild and calibration for the Cooper. I think from memeory that the Guy I dealt with was Steve and he is also a member of MOCQ and drives a Cooper 'S'.

David - did you just take the bear instrument in or do they need it in the car?

hi, ive got a 2.76 diff in my car so my speedo is way out. will they be able to recalibrate it also. do they need the car?

All repairs and calibration are done out of the car.

To calibrate the speedo they will ask you to roll your car through one revolution of the wheel and measure the number of times the speedo cable turns. This is the least they must have to calibrate the speedo to your car whatever the diff/wheel/tyre combination you have. Do this and it doesn't matter what you have fitted they will be able to calibrate it.

Do this by putting a little paper or bent wire pointer onto the end of the speedo cable and making a paper protractor to use as a background behind the pointer. Use chalk marks on the pavement and the tyre or similar to make sure the wheel moves one whole revolution and also measure the distance it rolled for the revolution of the wheel. Also make sure the tyre pressures are correct at the time you do it.

Maybe rotate the wheel through two rotations and halve the result to get an average for more accuracy. go crazy perhaps and measure it through four turns, the result simply gets better.

The shop may not be able to recalibrate your speedo to match your Diff...if thats the case, they can fit a small gearbox in the speedo cable line so that the Speedo is corrected.

Another way is to source and fit a Mini gearbox speedo drive gearset for that Diff.

The standard pre 1980 gear set is OK for 3.44 diff - with 12" wheels but I want to keep the 10" wheels. Apparently all other rations don't work or are for 12" wheels. To change to a 3.44 with 10" wheels before 1980 and standard gear set they used a different speedo which had a different serial number - now if I could find one of those

You have a choice of Mk1 S, Mk2 S (oz), Mk2/Mk3 UK S.
The last one is available new from Minisport, but probably cheaper to bring in like I did.
Also, a 140KMH Moke speedo marked 800 (turns/Km) is very close. I'm putting one in the van with a 3.44.
