Howdy,

Didnt do any damage to anything or anyone, so turned out to be a very funny mishap...

You are very lucky, not much damage! I had a wheel go at 110km/hr in a 4X4 - not fun!

that looks worse than when it happened to me, but i was going about 70kph... ground a bit off the brake drum. funnily enough, it was the same wheel (eg. front passenger) and the wide offset 'tessas...

oops.....

I've never had a wheel come off completely (touch wood), but I got down to 1 nut once or twice. I used to have a nasty habit of putting the wheels on, but forgetting to tighten the nuts. Using hubcaps has worked well for me, the caps don't go on unless the nuts are tight

my mates dad was driving his car to Sydney and one of the wheels came off, broke all the studs, and broke the base of the pin & nut off the balljoint - he hadn't realised about the balljoint, I got the subframe from the car recently and spotted the damage - I might post a pic later if I remember

 that nearly happened to me a month ago i tightened the nuts up with the wheel off the ground fairly tight then forgot to give them a proper tighten once i got the front wheels back on the ground luckly only had loose nuts didnt drop any. good to see no damage or injury

learn something new everyday, like when a second pair of pants come in handy at the most odd times

Did that with a rear wheel on the Landcruiser - 150 Km north of Leigh Creek in the middle of no where. Broke all the studs. 24 hours later we were on our way. Thank goodness the mine had Landcruiser and plenty of spare parts - new studs, nuts, bearings and seals (axle had to come out to replace the studs)

coming home from work in my first mini along Beach road Sandringham ,heard strange noise ,pulled up as the second last nut fell off. already lost the first two no 4 was loose, no wheel brace no jack .
real fun tightened the two remaining nuts up with a pair of pliers got me home just since then always check .
at Templestowe hill climb before it closed many years ago as a scrutineer handed a mini driver 3 wheel nuts that i removed with my fingers he was not happy you could hear him telling of his pit crew how displeased he was for quite some distance :( when he returned said "now get them #%^%%$ off" :D

Yep , been there done that too ... This is the damage to the sports850 from dropping front left wheel on the way to work one morning , sheared the ball joint bolt and nut clean off and ground a flat into the brake drum . I may be a little paranoid but I'd suggest replacing the bottom ball joint to be on the safe side .

I always use hub caps - you can hear the nuts rattling around that way :D

So what happened? Did the nuts work their way loose? Did the stud get threaded or were the nuts threaded?

Yep I had that happen years back a week after getting my brake discs professionally replaced...

felt a wheel wobble and went to pull off the main road.....
the wheel fell off in the middle of a roundabout (medium sized Canberra one) ...

Everyone thought I was mad "changing a tyre" in the middle of the roundabout!

Brake places response "You upset someone recently ?"

Funnily never been back to them...

Never let a tyre shop use a rattle gun on your nuts... wheel, that is..
If they don't break studs they will strip the nuts.
Clubbies are worse, most have BRASS nuts..

I park outside, and take my own wheels off thanks. 8)
