At some stage an after market aerial has been mounted on the front mudguard with it's obligatory hole. I don't what to use one of those chrome plugs - I'd prefer to restore to original surface.

How would you go about it?

With straw?

The best thing to do is weld it. Filler will sink back or fall out.
Get some copper behind the hole, and weld it up (weld wont stick to the copper
so the inside stays smoothish).

If the hole is big enough put a fill in piece of steel in there.

Spade should be enough to fill a hole...

Wait...

I'd imagine you source a piece of steel simular to a Mini body, cut it, shape it, weld in and grind flat.

Or find an old AM radio and put an antenna back in the hole , doesn't matter if it works or not really , so long as it looks like it should .

I used to cut a rectangle of steel bigger than the hole and tack weld it underneath then cut a circle of steel the right size and weld it in the hole, grind and bog to fit.

Good question wombat, I have the same problem. As a short term fix I found the rubber grommets from Clark rubber are very low profile and are hardly noticeable with a smooth surface almost shinny. Not sure if you have clark rubber there but I could send you one if you want. Cheers.

A bloke I know has the middle finger from a pink rubber glove fill with foam and a dirty finger nail drawn on it. It just sticks up out the hole :)
but then he drives a commode door

Just put a bloody aerial in it..
I like the Jaycar rubber ones, they don't break. If they perish with age I just screw a new one on.

You can see the square holes in this pic that a PO had put in for a wing mirror.

and in this one the large rectangular hole they had made for the aerial on the other side

Here is the mirror holes filled with small pieces cut from an old battery box, welded in and ground back.

same treatment for the aerial hole

This was my first ever attempt at welding a panel, so i was pretty happy.

cheers

I did mine too, it's not that difficult with a good mig welder, just work use a quick feed rate and a low power setting.
