hey all.

i want to rip out my carpets and replace them or just run without

but i also want to add some sound deadening to stop engine and exhaust noise from been to loud in the cabin. i dont think the carpet and sound deadening that is there does a lot.

i've read up quite a lot on the subject and think that a combination of dynamat and MLV (mass loaded vinyl or rubber matting) should do the trick fairly well.

i wanted to know what people have used and if they are happy with the results/reccomendations.

also wondering on what particular areas i should cover.
i was thinking the firewall, dash, floor to the front seats, then the back seat, parcel shelf and the area under the seat?

If memory serves me correct, Bostic make an adhesive sound deadening mat. you lay it down, hit it (not literaly  ) with a heat gun (hair dryer), and it conforms to the desired shape.
Just beware as it can be expensive, and the matting, for what it is, is a bit heavy.
This stuff was okay.

I have read that sound proofing the doors is also a key part of reducing noise.

however this is hard because there isn't anywhere suitable for the material.

Quite a few years back, and playing the usual broke student role , I stumbled across some poly-typish (dont know the technical name) material at Reverse Garbage (Adison Rd, Marrickville, Sydney). For those who are not in the loop, this place sells offcuts from various factories in the area.
Think I bought a large piece, enough to cover the entire interior floor, for less than $10.
Checked to make sure it could take the heat, burnt a bit to make sure it was not flammable too. Passed with flying colours. Cut it to size using the present carpets and laid it out and put the carpets over it.
There was a sizable decrease in noise, at the time I estimated a 10-15 percent decrease in road noise.

Forgot to mention. The stuff is light. I lifted it yesterday and the entire interior floor mat weighs about 2 or 3 kgs. I can take a photo of the material if anyone is interested. They always have that stuff in stock.

Marc, I'd be keen to have a look see at that if possible? Especially since it has passed your stringent fire standards! I'm familiar with the place down in Marrickville - good spot. Cheers!

that would be good. can you find a name or just what type of material it is for me that would be great.

been there done that, still want to be able to have a conversation without raising my voice too much.... if i went any bigger on the audio i'd lose the front seat as well.

love the sound it makes too much, just want it to be slightly quieter. this is more for engine and road noise.

Ryan: the car is an 850, so there is interior panel on the door, its just a big flat surface, easy to work on.

Micowen: where did you get the Bostic stuff? and how good is ok?

i'm looking to reduce noise by around 20% i think should be enough. all your comment are greatly appreciated guys thanks for the input

We use to use it on trucks, (and a few of the guys would score some for their cars as well. ).
I have never tried it personally, but I believe that it was good. Only hearsay mind you. There are a few minor differences between mini's and big rigs. :D
I use to get it up here in sydney from McGraths paint and parts. Any automotive parts/paint distributor should be able to get it. I will try to get a part number for you.

I have attached a photo of it here. The stuff is kind of a polystyrene type material - however it is not flammable. Its about 3 to 4 mm thick, and feels a little leathery. The front side is dark grey while the back is white. The discolouration are just rust marks (lousy seals + rain). Hope this helps.

okay EAB, here is all the info I could muster for you:
Bostik high performance sound deadening sheet 8152
24 (24 sheets to a box) x530mmx190mmx1.7mm
item code 216089
Bostik Australia
51-71 High Street Thomastown Vic. 3074
(03) 9729 9333
www.BOSTIK.com.au

Got this from the box in my shed, and it says specifically "not for under bonnet use".
I have a guinee pig here on ausmini who will try it out on one of his clubbies.
Or maybe I should ask him first if he's interested.
Hope the info helps.

I used Dynamat in my Alfa and the decrease in noise is amazing. When I restore my Mini's they will have Dynamat as well. It's expensive but it really works.

I pulled my carpets and underlay out and revealled an amount of rust that was hidden. When I finally get all the glue off the floor and firewall from my underlay and carpets I wont be sticking anything with glue back on. That way I can lift it out if the water happens to get in again (yes, I will be putting all new rubbers in) and conceals the metal while it rusts away of the years as has happened already. I was thinking of using some velcro strips to hold the new carpet and underlay in but still allow it to be removeable. Not sure if my theory will work yet. When I go to the trouble of removing all the rust I definitely dont want any coming back.
