Do i need to drop the full tank out? or do i just drop part of it to pull the float out?

i have not done this before so bear with me hehe.

looks pretty simple, ill drain the tank & hopefully some one gets back to me.

edit*

i asked this in another thread but whats an easy way to check the tank gauge is working.. can i cross a wire or use a tester light to make it move?

:)

You can pull out the van tank sender with the tank and rear subframe in place, but its easier if either of them are removed.

Get the car up as high as you can (safely) and undo the screws around the circumference of the sender mounting plate.
Do not round out the head of the screws as they can be tight if they haven't come out for a while.
You will have to jiggle the float/sender unit around a bit until you get to to the right angle, but you can get it out.

You will need a new gasket and it is best to put new screws in when you reinstall it.
I'm going to look for some cap head screws to replace the philips head screws when I next do mine so they don't round out as easily. :?

PS: I'm trying to remember here, but I think if you unplug the sender wire at the fuel tank and turn the ignition on it will showfull tank, but I may be completely wrong.

If you earth the sender wire it'll make the gauge read full (I think that's what I was told :? )

<edit> make sure the ignition is on when you do it otherwise it'll sit on empty.

Just pull the wire off and clamp / hold it to the body (one that isn't covered in rust / paint etc - i.e. a good earthing point).

If you hold the wire make sure you can see the gauge, otherwise clamp the wire to the earth and then look at the gauge OR have someone help you and tell you if it goes to full.

You can use a multimeter and measure the resistance as the float moves?

yes you can do that.. i cant find my meter :)

i just used a test light hooked it to the body & put the light onto the plug it moves the gauge up.

so gauge etc works it has to be the float inside.

i just wanted to double check.

thanks heaps for your help guys perfect.. i have run out of fuel god knows how many times lucky the mini is easy to push lol.

ill change it tomorrow when my part arrives.
