You can pull out the van tank sender with the tank and rear subframe in place, but its easier if either of them are removed.
Get the car up as high as you can (safely) and undo the screws around the circumference of the sender mounting plate.
Do not round out the head of the screws as they can be tight if they haven't come out for a while.
You will have to jiggle the float/sender unit around a bit until you get to to the right angle, but you can get it out.
You will need a new gasket and it is best to put new screws in when you reinstall it.
I'm going to look for some cap head screws to replace the philips head screws when I next do mine so they don't round out as easily.
PS: I'm trying to remember here, but I think if you unplug the sender wire at the fuel tank and turn the ignition on it will showfull tank, but I may be completely wrong.
