When it rains boxes,,, well it just pours boxes hey?

some of you may know that i`ve recently busted my kombi gearbox & i`m up for major chunks of money to repair the damn thing

well as it turns out, i have had quite a few mini boxes booked in to repair & i`ve been sorting all sorts of things for the whole lot, Matching cases, decent gear assys, new bearings & shafts etc etc etc ,,, the usual but just plenty of it all etc etc etc,,,, & it seems to be they`re still comming thick & fast,,, so i ripped in yesterday & today & bundled 4x mini boxes together all nice & new,,,, & this arvo i set up to sort out another 4x of the damn things,,, then at 6-ocklock-ish tonight i get 2 more calls for another 2x of the dam things needing do-ing

can someone please tell the gear-box gods to back-off for a little while,,, Please???









It`s really only the cleaning part that sh!tes me right off Damn things are always gungey & grotty & filthy disgusting to the "Nth" degree... if i could just employ a 25 year old blonde girl to clean all the cases for me it wouldn`t be so bad

Yeah, cleaning is the worst of any of these jobs, but Gearboxes do always seem the worst of the worst......

Cant be that bad, Ive seen a camry box where I had to chip the sludge out.
Makes me consider using that nulon snake oil, Or dropping a bit of diesel in it before each change.

I'm amazed.. Whenever I take anything for repair, machining or service I make sure the parts are spotless. It's the decent thing to do. Isn't it??

Certainly helps put the mechanic in a better mood.

At least its not diesel oil. I just last week pulled apart a little 3cyl turbo diesel stationary motor which was very poorly serviced. Ended up spinning the bearings in the rods.

The thing is, most of the ripoffs would charge you the same labour amount whether they cleaned it or your cleaned it.

See now that's the thing, but with me it's a matter of principle. The other thing is I trust very few people with doing mechanical work as I've been bitten before and don't enjoy being ripped off. If you go to someone long enough you build up a good relationship and if you look after them, then they look after you. I think anyone who has something to do with a business and Minis on this forum or in any business for that matter would agree with me on that.

Agree with you there mini kit. I always let people do as much or as little as they like. I prefer getting nice clean gearboxes to assemble, and I only charge per hour for my time so if I don't have to spend a couple of hours cleaning a gearbox I am happy. Also my customers are happy that they have contributed to their box rebuild and saved a bit of money as well.


I find its best to strip the box and then go through all of the components and show which parts are worn and why they should be replaced. A good way to operate I reckon.
