I'm having some difficulties fitting the timing cover oil seal. Its the open (spring) side to the engine right?

Well it keeps popping out of its hole, is there a specific way of intstalling it?

Yes the spring & lip go towards the engine. There should be an oil slinger next to the sprocket too.

I put a piece of tube inside the seal, and thump it in carefully with a BFH.
The seal and cover need to be dry and clean- if you use gasket cement it will slip around as you have found.
Seal is neoprene coated, doesn't need any sealer.

The oil seal was hanging on the shaft with bits torn off. Still havent seen the oil thrower

Oil slinger is a `flat' bit of metal with a hole and keyway in it. Helps keep the oil off the seal..
I'd find one, if missing.
double row chain one is different to single row.

ps, Mike, make sure you Loctite the crank bolt and balancer again, when you reassemble..

No slinger - old oil seal is worn to the metal both front and back.

I think it'll have to forget the slinger this time - really want to put the car back on the road. I can always redo it all again in the future. Do you reckon the oil seal is just gonna survive less time without the slinger or is it just gonna perish pretty much straight away?

Probably what happened is the seal and balancer were assembled dry. Always smear some oil or grease on the seal lips, otherwise it will `burn' when you start the motor. Takes time for oil to get there....
Yes it will work (until seal wears) without a slinger, pick one up for next time!

Shite did I forget to put the Slinger On.. If I rember correctly the Old one was worn out with no notch left on it

Also Cant say I put Grease around the inside of the seal My Bad..

without the slinger on the chain doesnt get as much lubricant adn the bottom gear can wonder a bit and puts extra friction (heat ) on the seal causing it to wear out quicker.
make sure you put it ona dn put it the right way or you will burn out the seal in about 10 mins and you will have to do it all again.

And the winner today is minicranks. He gets the secret prize!!! Why? you might ask. Let me tell you why:

Well I've started at 5am yesterday and finished at 5pm (12hrs - I know - I guess I'm a slow worker but I had some complications along the way and then the alt, bottom support collapsed and I realised my dizzy is loose too etc, etc).

But we get to 5 pm, I've already ran the car with the new oil seal but without the radiator etc on for 5 minutes and checked for leaks and waited 1/2 hour and 5 mins again and check again and no oil - yeppee - so by five I've got the rad and everything on, coolant it and started running it to see where the dizzy is supposed to be sitting. Done that, its now 5pm I havent slept in 2 days, I'm exhausted but satisfied and guess what my little girl does as soon as I switch the engine off - yes pisses oil all over the f'in driveway (thats the driveway which was covered with newpapers before waiting for the oil to leak but I've just removed them). Donkey mein arse. My dad took a photo of the cracked brick where I punched the wall.

So that timing cover (uselessly chromed as if any one can see it) doesnt seem to like holding the oil seal in it. I would shove it in there and use a pipe to fix it inside but it just pops out in a minute or less. So the pulley just pushes it out no matter how much oil you use. Also had difficulties with extracting the pulley and fixing it back on so had to unbolt the engine mounts and jack the engine up and down. Finaly got the puley on the shaft, then lower the engine to allow clearance for it to move on the shaft and somehow got the pulley through the seal - but I reckon the seal just popped off again and is f'in around banging against the timing gears.

So minicranks was remarkaly close - exactly 10 minutes of operation.

Now I'm gonna have to do it right - anyone wants to sell us an oil slinger (double row chain), a timing cover, a metal fan (tropical or 4 blade) and a do it yourself Voodoo kit?

Oh and Gaf. its ok, I'll get back at you one day. And like Mrs Brady told mr Brady just dont do it to Marsha too

I'll give you a timing cover, dunno if I have a slinger but I'll look.
My guess is the chrome plating in the hole won't let the seal get a grip.
WHY did BMC fit the bloody seal from inside- I'm sure early 850 etc had it fitted from the outside!

Yea they did have it from the outside. - The chrome cover ran for a few years in this engine without leaking (too much) so there might be a trick to using it - but f'ed if I know - f'ed if I care. you cant see the chrome down there anyway.

Good news though - the gears are much, much better now - the 4th is solid and the 1st is easier to engage. If it gets loose again - I'll just get myself a new clamp and\or a new shaft. Its still not like yours (feels like there are 2 elements of slackness - one in the remote to box link and a bit in the box - but it doesnt really bother me.
