1 tooth = 18°.
It's easy to be out 1 tooth unless you are careful. I hang the big sprocket below the small one in the chain before fitting, and put a straight edge through the 2 sprocket centres and the dots...

use a big degree disc on the flywheel and set the cam timing up to the degrees that the valves open at. Turn the engine in direction of travel to eliminate any chain slack.
It's the only safe way to do it. You are right NEVER TRUST THE DOTS

When I rebuilt the Diesel engine in my Ford Van I experienced this. We thought there was something wrong with the newly rebuilt injector pump as the engine was starting and running very rough and smoking like diesel was not getting burnt correctly. Further checking revealed that the markings on the pump drive gear was on the next tooth so timing was wrong even though the marks were all lined up. I lined it up as per compression and inject stroke (one tooth out) and ran like a charm. 16 years later and it is still going like a train.

Yep, that's what I did, moved chain one tooth. You would think they had a jig for that or something.
I used the big protractor and push-rod method
Anyway I've got an offset woodruff key on its way.

Doesn't hurt to set it at an inital 1 to 2 deg. advanced to allow for chain wear.
