I was doing a bit of work this Long weekend cleaning out some of the smaller parts on my flood rover before doing a shop for all the bits that definitely. need replacing This may be a stupid question - but is there any way i can test if the Guages ( speedo , temp , Oil Heater , headlights etc are working still ? (( and no,i cant just turn on the Key ) I have pulled them all out of the car - so it will have to be hooked up to a car battery i am assuming but is there some method to this without causing further / any damage If i should just take them all to a auto elec, then thats fine as well if someone wants to suggest anyone in Bris |

Ok since no one else cares to reply , probably because they can't see the chance to bait and or troll I'll have a crack and also answer your question as best I can ,, here goes firstly do not hook anything directly to your battery unless you don't care if you break it and secondly what any member on here would probably do is to pull the gauges in question apart as much as they could without causing any damage to them make sure they are dry clean up the dirty bits put them back together reinstal them and they should work just fine ... |

Yes, as our slightly paranoid friend Jimmy has said ( ![]() ![]() You need to make sure that all the silt the floodwater has brought in has been removed. This will be nearly impossible with the alternator, heater motor and starter motor, but should be simple enough with the gauges. Gauges are very simple inside being more related to simple mechanical gauges than anything too technological. You can try flushing them through with clean water to wash the silt out, or you can try heavier cleaning agents like Electra Clean. This stuff may affect the way the front of the gauge looks, and ruin clear perspex so be careful how you apply it. Apply it to the parts you want to clean only, and be careful elsewhere. Headlights will need to be drained out and washed, indicator lamps as well. The lights inside the car will be fine with a wash out. I would change the bulbs out and spray sockets and connectors with a spray of Lanotec. Lanotec is sheep lanoline mixed with a thinner which protects contacts and prevents corrosion, I use this stuff at sea on communication equipment frequently submerged on the forecastle. It works most excellent. All the same, they've been wet once, it will not do any harm to wash them out again. The dirt is your enemy, not the water. |
