Hi guys I'm just wondering about putting a 1975 leyland mini 1100 engine in to a 1962 Morris 850 would I have any issues or need to change anything? With a 1.44 diff ratio in it also? If that makes any difference.

Thanks in advance =)

Fitment wise, the only issue you'd have is that it's rod change gearbox and your 850 will have a pudding stirrer gearlever which means cutting large holes in the floor *shudder* so your gear lever comes out of the floor, as well as holes for rod change brackets.

Your speedo and odo will read wrong too but that can be recalibrated.

If you buy the engine, make sure you get a receipt stating the engine number for rego purposes.

1975 engine should be a rod-change type gearbox with "pot-type" axles & 998cc type donk (engine)

your 850 should be a puddin stirrer gearshift with uni-joint type axles

so they can be interchanged with a bit of work

however if your 1975 Leyland actually has an 1100cc engine in it then i`d be checking what gearbox it has first

nearly all these cars have been played with at some stage & it`s anyones guess what engines & gearboxes are actually in your cars till we see them,,, maybe take some pics of undewr the car for both the gearshift mechanisms & the axles where they come out of the diff housing yeah??? then we can tell you for sure

:-)

just on that point, it's a 3.44 - the car couldn't drive with a 1.44 ;)

Kermit's car once had a remote box in it and already has the hole in the floor.

If you get the driveshafts and shifter mechanism with the engine, then no problem. :)

Simple question Simon...did 850s have the lowest of all Mini Diffs? or does a Moke claim that one?

I would expect they would given their limited amount of go-forward (I know, Issy had to detune them because they were "too fast" in their day)

Lowest diff was fitted to mokes (& Morris 1100) at 4.267:1

Stock 850 was 3.76:1

cheers,

Jacob

I read in one of the UK Mini mags that the 998 Cooper coil be special ordered with a 4.9. Popular with ice racing in Scandinavian countries.

It's a 998 block with an 1100 crank. Bit of work done. It doesn't have the gear stick and rod changer. Would I be able to get one? I could be wrong but I'm quoting what I was told.

Yeah as bnicho said its already had the holes cut for it as it had one in it befor.

The engine I'm looking at getting was in an accident that the car rolled a few times and destroyed the gear selector but the box itself is intact and so is the engine. Still holding oil etc. should I be checking anything or be concerned about the engine needing work or having issues that you can't see. It may very well be perfectly fine but because its at the top of Australia and I'm in Melbourne I can't go and look at it myself.

Thats a difficult question because none of us can look inside the engine to check it

so you just have to "suck-it-n-see" as the saying goes :-)

& yes the shifters are easy enough to get, try josh from Minimports maybe
