Afternoon Gents,
Currently on the mini market to buy another one. Had one back in 2005 and loved it but as a student ended up having to sell. So i have been looking for another one and ive found one im interested in.
My dilemma is its registered in qld and i want to bring it back to nsw. Its a 1275 engine and only has oversized drum brakes on the front.
Ive searched through ausmini and people say it needs disc brakes to be registered then some people say when getting a blue slip the brakes never got checked and some have even passed with drum brakes. Does anyone know if there is a official rule on this?
Also if i do need to change them, can i buy it and run it on qld rego (which runs out end of march) and change it to disc brakes in between now and then, then blue slip it in nsw and rego it?

The official rule is that all 1275 minis came with discs - so discs are required. Some people may have had them registered without, but that's probably because the people doing the rego didn't know. Only exception to this rule that I know of was some of the 1275 mokes had drum brakes.

Edit: Yes, drum brakes on the mokes, not discs.

I wouldn't buy a Mini with a 1275 and drums and not expect to need to change them to get it registered. If the car plus a disc brake kit fits in your budget then go for it.

In answer to your question on running it on QLD rego. If you are resident in NSW (or move here from interstate), you have a defined amount of time before you need to change over your license (if applicable) and registration. That info should be on the RMS website. It might be three months I think in the case of registration, in which case you may well squeeze it in with some good planning.

Would the owner be willing to allow you (without them transferring it/submitting disposal notice with QLD Roads in the meantime) would be the question.

AND - what would you do with insurance?

Blue slip is essentially identity check, should look at standard safety items as well, as done for pink slip.

The modification of the car you are contemplating is the fitment of an engine that was factory optional in certain models of the car. In order to owner certify, all other equipment that came with that factory fitted engine option that affect safety must be fitted. In other words the brakes must be discs.

If you have any doubts then call the technical number the RMS gives you.


If you do not fit the disc brakes, i guarantee you that your insurance will not be valid and you will be liable for anything that happens. Not worth the risk.
