I've noticed lately that I can feel the subframe moving under my feet when I drive my car. I checked the bolts the other day and all were tight, except for the two under the pedals so I retightened them - however I can still feel the floor flexing a small amount when driving around (when not wearing shoes).
Last time I checked the floor and frame were solid in that area, though it's been a while so I'll clamber under for a look on the weekend.

Is the normal? If not, could it be related to the dual engine stabilisers I have connecting the sump to the bottom of the subframe?

(car is a 68 model, with dry front subframes)

Thanks.
:D

Do you have the ones that bolt to sub frame bolts? If so that might be it, there's a fair bit of torque leverage through them, I prefer the double top mounts.

No, my lower stabilisers had to have two extra holes drilled in the frame, about 4-6 inches infront of the floor mounts.

The floor possibly needs stiffening because of the extra loads that are getting fed in that area.
BMC Australia stiffened the 1100 floor across the frame mounts.

Floor may be cracked?
Steering Rack may be moving?

Do the mini racers stiffen their floors?

Ill look into strengthening and for cracks- but wouldnt have thought a standard 50hp engine would be enough to do anything......but with a 47 year old car its a lot of work over time in that area.
Ill check the rack too thats a good idea, but theres no movement in the kickpanel so im hoping thats fine.

If the 6 nuts and bolts are tight and the 4 tower top studs or bolts are tight then its time to look for cracks. Most common is the welds on the tower tops.

Well I finally pulled up the carpets and climbed under the car for a look - no cracks in the subframe or body regions, which is good. I then checked all the nuts for tightness and though not movable by hand, with a spanner on them the tower studs moved more than I'd have liked - so all tightened up now to something far more solid.

I also replaced the washers on the floor mounting bolts with bigger ones as the ones I took out have deformed in shape a bit.

Took the car for a drive and no movement now - all fixed.

Years ago when I tracked mine I found the 4 floor bolts used to work loose. So I fitted locknuts, problem solved. You could use nyloc nuts instead.
